About

Peter Benoit Photography is based in the foothills of the southeastern Adirondack Mountains of New York. He concentrates on landscape and wildlife images to celebrate the natural world while emphasizing ways to minimize human impact on wild places, both public and private.

“I began my photographic journey as a young boy documenting the physical wonders and public attractions of upstate New York, New England, and southeastern Canada. I found joy in bringing home memories for myself, family and friends.”

“Today, I travel the breadth of Europe and North America to capture the beauty of the continents and to document environmental changes. In 1996, I explored the high Arctic as a civilian guest of the Air National Guard at Ice Station Ruby located north of Greenland on the polar ice cap; I documented daily life at 82 degrees latitude for three days at -70F.”

“In 2018, I joined a National Geographic land and sea expedition exploring Norway’s Svalbard Archipelago where I again attained 82 degrees latitude – approximately 400 miles south of the geographic North Pole.”

“The twenty-two-year separation in my trips to the high Arctic heightened awareness and alarm over the impact of climate change, allowing me to document the degradation of the polar ice cap, glaciers and permafrost as a result of global warming. As an environmental photographer, the primary goal of my work is to educate others on the consequences of a warming planet in the Arctic and other places.”

Throughout the year, Peter hikes the shores and mountainsides of Lake Champlain and Lake George to document its natural beauty. His photographic capture of Bald Eagles, Ospreys, and other birds have been published on websites and culminated in two solo exhibitions.

He shares observations of climate change and photographs of high Arctic flora and fauna, images of Grizzly Bear family units feeding in Lake Clark National Park and views from a glacier below the summit of 20,000’ Denali Mountain, both in Alaska. Peter has documented the attack of a lone male Polar Bear on a pair of resting Walrus’. He shares his wildlife images with elementary school children in after-school programs.
